First, we need to know agility. Many health trainers and sports experts believe the meaning introduced by Sheppard and Young back in 2006. They define agility as “a rapid whole-body action with a change of velocity or direction in rejoinder to a provocation.” The difference between this and other outlines is that agility is not pre-planned and prepared. On the opposite, changes in direction happen in reply to outside stimuli.

The issue with agility ladder drills is that all of the actions are pre-planned. There is no precise stimulus in the form of a defending player or irregular actions. Here are some key soccer agility and dribbling workout we teach here in our soccer academy

Partner Ball Tag

This is an outstanding exercise to improve agility. 9 players must hold the 20-by-20-yard grid to attend the taggers and the ball. They must react to the actions of the taggers to avoid getting tagged and shot. Besides improving agility, it is a fun activity that extracts many laughs.

Create a 20-by-20-yard grid utilizing cones or tags.

One ball is used for each grid.

Each grid is provided 11 players, 2 of them play as “taggers.” The other 9 must avoid the “taggers.”

The “taggers” hold the ball. They are permitted to throw the ball to other players. Only the “tagger” with the soccer ball is allowed to tag other players.

The last member left of the 9 members gets the game.

The driving inspection

This is a wonderful drill to build agility and ball control. The athletes are required to respond to directions from a coach. The players need to decelerate, accelerate and change path at a moment’s notification, related to game conditions that require swift turns with the ball that are not pre-planned.

Create a 20-by-20-yard grid applying markers or cones.

Each soccer athlete holds a soccer ball.

Each grid holds 6 players.

The rules are: Stop, Slow Down, Go, Left Turn, Speed Up, Right Turn, and U-Turn.

The trainer calls out the words randomly for a specified amount of time.

Modified 4-Cone Exercise

In the usual 4-Cone Exercise, the athletes do pre-planned actions, then one-touch the ball back to the trainer. In this revised variant, members respond to instructions provided by the trainer, then one-touch the soccer ball back to the coach. Again, the training works on the cognitive tasks related to increasing agility.

Design a 5-by-5-yard grid applying tags or cones.

One player at a time.

Total of 25 to 35 seconds per member.

Give out the following calls: Sprint Forward, Backpedal, Right Side Shuffle, Left Side Shuffle.

The player must react to commands and do them.
