The Strengths & Delicacies of Soccer Formations

on

Unless you are training an under-6 team, with three kids allowed to form random triangles, you need to give some shape to your athletes on the field. Older youth and grown-up teams place one athlete in goal and organize the remaining 10 athletes, so each has a rough sense of where to be on defense, offense, and in development. Knowing the strengths and delicacies of potential forms helps you better match the form to your players and your game approach. Get register with My Soccer Academy and enjoy free classes. Get to know about Strengths & Delicacies of Soccer Forms

4-4-2
The most common formation for athletes aged 15 and older, including grown-ups and international play, is the 4-4-2. This form uses 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and two attackers. Like most new formations, the 4-4-2 features defense first. This formation is balanced, with each side a glass image of the other. Therefore, athletes can easily regain their fitness on transition, because the position of the left-back, for example, imitates that of the right back. Exceptions include the diamond formation, where the four midfielders play in a diamond formed when one central midfielder goes forward to attack, and one stays back to improve on defense.

4-4-2 Application
This basic structure best suits a team of balanced intensities facing another group of equal capabilities. A 4-4-2 team that faces an opponent in a 4-3-3, with just three midfielders, enjoys a distinct advantage in the midfield. If you help your wing defenders and midfielders to move ahead on the attack, 4-4-2 converts to a 2-4-4 to hold opposing defenses. This energy can also be a weakness, as your pushed-up team can be responsive to counterattacks that prove your momentarily missing defenders.

4-3-3
More popular in unskilled play in past decades, the 4-3-3 order still shows up among recreational and competing teams confident of their offensive advantage over an opponent. The 4-3-3 highlights three midfielders and three forwards; the third forward mainly puts pressure on a defense. The power of the 4-3-3 is its flexibility.

Barcelona’s Version
At the other end of the spectrum from unskilled play, European winner Barcelona has improved a version of the 4-3-3, based on its sublimely skillful midfielders and forwards that communicate with each other with continuous motion and passing to distract opponents. The formation does risk more significant fatigue among the busy forwards. So handlers of teams with less skill than Barcelona may go to a 4-3-3 only in the late steps of the game to explore a needed goal.
